Tamerlane

"Poe's Tamerlane Book"

Tamerlane was the first book published by Edgar Allan Poe. Only 40 to 50 were published at the time, of which a mere 12 remain. Poe's name doesn't even appear on the cover, instead the author is listed as "a Bostonian." In December 2009, a copy was sold at auction for $662,500.

"The Tamayo painting."

Tamayo refers to Rufino Tamayo, a Mexican painter who painting figurative abstraction with surrealist influences. A 1970 painting "Tres Personajes was stolen from a storage locker in 1987 and later found in the trash in New York City in 2003 by Elizabeth Gibson. Gibson spent four years trying to learn about the painting and eventually learned on PBS website that it had been stolen. In November, 2007, the painting was sold at auction for $1,049,000.

"Washington's Love Letters."

Washington's love letters refers to letters written by President George Washington. It is unclear, however, if the letters referenced were written to Martha, George's wife, or Sally Fairfax, wife of his best friend and neighbor. After George died, Martha burned the letters she and George wrote to each other. Only two survived because they were hidden behind Martha's desk drawers. Letters Washington wrote to Sally shortly before his marriage to Martha also survive but did not surface until 1958.

"Don't get 'em wet. Don't feed 'em after midnight, right?"

Caffrey is referencing the 1984 movie Gremlins. In the movie, a man purchases the mogwai Gizmo from an old Chinese man (or rather his son) similar to the man Caffrey is talking to. In the movie, there are three things you must not do with your mogwai: (1) Keep them out of bright light, (2) Don't get them wet, and (3) Never feed them after midnight.

"Red Lantern. Where do I know that from?" "Could be a sunburnt superhero."

The Green Lantern is a DC comics superhero and member of the Justice League of America. Caffrey is suggesting what he might be called if he was slightly sunburned.

"Already seen this one on Cinemax."

Cinemax is a cable channel known for their "After Dark" programming, a late night programming block that features softcore porn.

"I think I just saw the Ark of the Covenant back there." "If my face melts, let me know."

This is a reference to the 1981 movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the movie, the Nazis melt away after they open the Ark and look inside. Toward the end of the movie, the ark is seen being placed in a nondescript warehouse, not to far different from the one Caffrey and Burke are in.
