In order to find out more about Vincent Adler, Peter arrives at Neal’s apartment. He offers Neal full immunity to any crimes he has committed in the past in exchange for information on Adler. Neal accepts the deal and tells the story of how he met Kate, Mozzie and Adler.

Eight years ago, Neal had just arrived in New York City. He meets Mozzie after conning his partner in a game of 3-Card Monty. Mozzie approaches Neal about a possible bigger con. He wants to target Vincent Adler, a CEO of a hedge fund company worth billions. He needs Neal to be the front man for a long con. Neal becomes Adler's protégé. Adler teaches Neal about the finer things in life: how to dress, wines, food, etc. He also introduces Neal to his assistant, Kate Moreau. Neal falls in love with her, But Kate has a boyfriend and doesn't know Neal's true identity because he's using the name Nick Halden. As Neal continues to work for Adler he meets a mysterious grifter named Alex Hunter and learns about a mysterious music box believed stolen by the Nazis.

Meanwhile, Peter gets wind of Neal after Neal cashes in a bond he forged in order to fund the con on Adler. While working for Adler, Neal meets and starts a romance with Alex. But eventually Kate breaks up with her boyfriend and hooks up with Neal. Kate doesn't know that Neal is working a con on Adler or that Adler's company is one big con. She discovers the truth about both men when Adler disappears with a billion dollars.

Neal and Kate are unemployed and broke so they start running cons with Mozzie. But when Neal tries to trick her into running a con with Alex, Kate gets upset and disappears.Neal tries to find her but is unsuccessful sorry devices to capture attention by calling bigger and bigger cons. But instead of Kate's attention Neal ends up in the crosshairs of the FBI. Realizing that Neal is trying to find Kate, Peter uses her to catch him. The episode ends with Neal and Peter realizing that the way to Adler is through the fractal antenna Mozzie is building. Nathan Garrison

Willie Garrison's (Mozzie) adopted son appears in this episode. He is the kid that Mozzie sends to follow Neal home after the scam.

Speaking of the scam, Matt (Neal) really switched the cards. It's not editing. In fact, if you slow down the image, you can see the red card in his hand as he makes the switch.

Two casual mentions are repeated or repeats in other episodes. One, Neal says "Hale takes a cut." Hale was the fence that gave Neal information on Alex in Point Blank. Also, when Mozzie meets Neal to give him information about Kate, Neal talks about going to Burma to steal gems. This is repeated in the episode What Happens in Burma.

The Bad Guy

Vincent Adler was the CEO of a hedge fund company worth billions. Neal Caffrey takes a job with his company in order to obtain his account number and password (a long con that Mozzie dreamed up). But before Neal could pull the con, Adler disappeared and it was revealed that his company was just a front for a giant Ponzi scheme. Adler disappeared with over a billion dollars.

Kate Clues

We learn the backstory to Neal and Kate's relationship, how the met and how Neal and Alex became interested in the music box.

Allusions

"That's not supposed to be one of Monet's lost frames?"

Monet is the French impressionist painter Claude Monet. (Editor's Note: I have yet to find anything about his lost frames.)

"You know, the irony of that would not be lost on Alanis Morissette."

Alanis Morissette is an Canadian-American singer who had a hit song named "Ironic."

Magnum PI

"Yeah, sorry, Magnum."

Magnum, P.I. was a television series in the 1980s that starred Tom Selek as Thomas Magnum.

"Satchmo..." "Elizabeth likes old jazz. You don't."

"Satchmo" is the jazz-legend Louis Armstrong's nickname.

"Bonds. James Bonds."

James Bond is a fictional British Secret Intelligence Service agent created by Ian Fleming. Over 20 feature films have been made based on this character.

"Shaken, not stirred?"

James Bond always orders his martinis this way.

"Know thyself, and you will win a hundred battles."

A paraphrase of a quote by Sun Tzu. The original quote is "It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle."

"Know thine enemy, and you will win... Sun Tzu."

Again, a paraphrase of a Sun Tzu quote. Sun Tzu is a 6th century B.C. Chinese General, military strategist, and author of The Art of War.

Moby Dick

"There he is, our white whale."

Mozzie is referring to the book Moby Dick, in which a man is constantly searching for a white whale.

"A wise man once said it's fun to do the impossible."

As Mozzie said, the (paraphrased) quote is by Walt Disney. The original quote is "It's kind of fun to do the impossible."

"You have learned much, grasshopper."

This line is referencing a phrase repeated in the tv show Kung Fu.

"Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides."

St. Augustine was a Latin-speaking philosopher and theologian who lived in the Roman Africa Province around 400 B.C.

"Oh, pop quiz, hot shot..."

This quote comes from the movie Speed. Probably the most famous line of the movie features it: "Pop quiz, hotshot. There's a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do?"

Saint George and the Dragon... is a small cabinet painting by the Italian Renaissance painter, Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino). It has not been stolen, but hangs in the Washington Gallery.

"Hale takes a cut. "

Hale is a fence that Mozzie and Caffrey have used. He was introduced in the episode Point Blank.
