Kate Moreau was Neal Caffrey's long time on-again/off-again girlfriend. She originally pursued life as an artist, but quickly became disillusioned with life as a starving artist. So she took a job working as Vincent Adler's assistant until he disappeared with a billion dollars in a Ponzi scheme. She was then taught the fine art of being a con artist by Neal and Mozzie. Kate Moreau met Neal Caffrey at a $5,000-a-plate antiquities recovery project charity dinner while she was working as Adler's assistant. Neal was using the alias Nick Halden. Although charmed by Neal, Kate was dating a man named Michael at the time and planned to move to Chicago with him. But when the time came, Kate dumped Michael and moved in with Neal. (2.11)

On her first date with Neal, they conned their way into a rich man's hotel room. They ordered the most expensive food they had (which included 5 thousand-dollar hamburgers). From the window, there was a view of a rundown old bridge. (2.2) While they are together, Neal and Kate often met in Madison Square Park for lunch. (2.11) They also used to fill a 1982 Bordeaux bottle with cheap wine and pretend it was more expensive wine while eating margarita pizza (2.11, 1.1) Neal and Kate dreamed of having a villa on the Côte d'Azur. Kate breaks up with Neal after he attempts to con her into going to Copenhagen to help Alex steal the music box. Neal attempts to find her once he returns to New York but is unsuccessful. She would move to a new place every week to keep him from tracking her down. During this time Kate was making her money by fencing Mauritian penny and forging Raphael paintings. (2.11)

Kate inadvertently leads to Neal's capture when Peter Burke leaks her whereabouts to Neal and then stakes out her storage area. (2.11) The reunion is short-lived, but Kate sticks by Neal this time. She visited him every week in prison until she suddenly stops about four and a half months before he was to be released (six weeks before he escaped) where she again breaks up with him. (1.1) During her last visit to him, she used the alias Kate Purdue. Purdue means "lost" in French. (1.1)

But her breakup with Neal was not by her choice. Kate is being used to force Neal to track down the amber music box. Kate believed that Neal had stolen it and hid it in San Diego, California, with his other stolen goods. In reality, Neal didn't have the music box nor had he hidden any items in San Diego. (1.2)

Kate is prevented from returning to Neal until he gives Agent Fowler the music box. In the end, she plans to escape with Neal in an airplane. Kate felt the only way they would be safe is if they blew up the plane in mid-air, convincing everyone that they had died. (2.9) When Peter Burke shows up at the airport, Kate calls Vincent Adler. Adler then blows up the plane and kills Kate. (1.14)
